Drone Delivers First Successful Organ to Transplant Patient
Drones are changing the landscape of our society, from engineering to making videos, drones are becoming a greater tool than ever before. Now the very first drone delivered kidney has taken place ending with a successful transplant for the patient. To date, the most common manner of transporting a donated organ is through the use of a carrier system such as ambulance or helicopter. With that being said, the University of Maryland Medical Center said last week that Unmanned drone delivery systems could take the place of other means of transportation, due to them becoming the fastest, safest and least expensive method of transportation. Thereby allowing the organ to reach its destination faster with less rick to the organ caused by decay.
According to CNN, Current statistics suggest that approximately 1.5% of all donor organ shipments don’t make it to their destinations with another 4% experiencing delay of two hours or more. During this time period, the organ decay rate increases, thereby making it more of a challenge for it to work properly once it has been successfully transferred. It is for this reason that many doctors are looking at new methods of transporting the organ which gives a greater chance of a successful transplant to the patient. This is where drones are coming into play as a custom built drone specifically designed for organ transportation can create a more streamlined approach to the operation. Thereby opening the door to a wider selection of donors and patients.
This was proven to be the case as a joint team of experts from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, the University of Maryland and the Living Legacy Foundation of Maryland designed the drone which facilitated the transportation of the 44-year-old transplant patient who was on has spent the last eight years on dialysis. The success is groundbreaking not just from a scientific and engineering standpoint, but because it gives new opportunities for enhancing human life over the long term.
